The quality of these hoops seems to be top-notch as well. To start with, when I rested the 14" hoop on my index finger and struck the hoop with the shoulder of my stick, the hoop rang like a bell and it was beautiful (but I had to find a sweet spot first due to basic physics, just in case you want to try this). I loved it and so I just kept doing it over and over! Then I tried one of my 14" stock hoops (1.6mm), and it went "clunk" with a slight ring, and it wasn't musical like these new hoops. I would have done this with the new 10" and 12" hoops, but I had already installed them.
Continuing on about the quality, these sit PERFECTLY flat on my heads (on the heads' hoops) unlike my stock hoops. That made my day when I saw that. So, I would say that these hoops are perfectly flat and perfectly true. The ease of tuning has increased quite noticeably as well over my stock hoops. I don't remember a time when tuning my drums was this easy; they've always been a major pain to tune. So, when I was tuning up for the first time with these hoops, I knew that my sound was going to be noticeably better!
So, then there's the sound. Before I get into it, it's worth mentioning here that I have RIMS mounts and I had my bearing edges professionally recut by a local drum shop who makes their own high-end drums (meaning, they are VERY good at this). So, the sound that I'm getting now isn't 100% due to the hoops, but the hoops have definitely made a massive improvement. Now, I've never played drums that have 2.3mm hoops before, but these are making my toms produce a much better sound than ever before - much closer to my ideal sound. They finally sound (AND FEEL) like real drums and they're finally inspiring me to play! My band agrees on the improvement to their sound and they are also saying that they seem louder and they're also loving the improved appearance almost as much as I am. I love it! I had no idea that these cheap shells could produce these sounds. They're certainly not producing high-end sounds (because they can't due to the shells), but they're way better than ever before. At this point, I can say that I'm finally happy with my drums! (But naturally, I would be much happier with some super high-end drums!)
The difference is this: instead of producing a sound that's relatively short, ugly and weak, my toms are finally producing a stronger and more musical singing quality with much better definition/articulation and sustain (well, as much as I can get out of these shells). In other words, I think that this was the final touch that was needed and now I'm finally getting the absolute best sound that I can possibly get out of my toms now - and here I thought that I was done after getting the RIMS mounts and having my bearing edges recut! I have suspected at times that I might need to replace my hoops, but I had no idea that it would be like this!
So, not only do my drums have an awesome look now, but they also have an awesome sound (relatively speaking), and I owe it all to these hoops. I couldn't be happier!
(I posted this on the 12" and 14" 6-hole 2.3mm hoop product pages as well)
