Remo Renaissance heads, in general, aren't like anything else. Like their Suede cousins, the film itself is different, and not really coated, but looks more scoured, giving the film a texture great for brushwork, and a unique response. For instance, if the head isn't really in tune with itself, you can feel it in the stick when you strike it. The heads are somewhat translucent, and whatever the Renaissance treatment is, it's applied to both sides of the head. So on a tom, a Renaissance batter certainly differs from a clear or coated better, when a clear reason is used. But if you exchange said better for a Renaissance Ambassador, the two work together, and the tom takes on a more rounded character! Worth exploring; and combining the Emperor batter with. Renaissance snare side gives an incredible sound. Exactly like calf? Couldn't swear to it, but not the same as a coated head either. Fuller, shall we say, with less attack. A great sound for jazz and oldies, but not limited to those genre either. Great heads!
