I put this on an old 80's Tama Imperialstar 5.5"x14" seamless steel snare. I don't muffle and this thing is bright and penetrating with overtones for days if not tuned well. I use a clear 3mil bottom paired with Grover Club Combo cable snares. String is used to pitch up the ends and dry things out a bit more. The cables make contact with the head about about 1-3/4" from snare bed. Die cast hoops for additional focus/control. Mated with coated 2 plys or pinstripes it sounds great but found these on Remo's site. It's description states these heads use a "proprietary texturing process that produces a focused, warm midrange tone and a soft feel" and thought it would work well with steel. The description is dead on. At medium tuning the center of the snare almost sounds woody with lots of punch and just a hint of that "steel" overtone. Working the edge the steel tones are pronouced but not overpowering or out of control and no snare buzz. Overall my drum sounds fuller During my daily rudiments with this head/snares combo I can also clearly hear the difference in power and control of each hand. Don't hesitate to try out various heads to get the sound you want and make sure that the snare wires you're using match your beds.
